Mexico is an Indian country. More than 12 percent of the population is purely indigenous, and the majority of the rest is mestizo, culturally and genetically indigenous and European or African. Whoever does not understand this Indian aspect and its effect on the hearts and minds of Mexicans cannot grasp the idea of Mexico, even now, in the twenty-first century.
